Sheffield

The city of my birth.

Sheffield Town Hall

Sheffield Town Hall

About the 6th largest city in England (some debate about this!). Sheffield was once the industrial powerhouse of England, dirty and polluted, but now is a major center for Arts and Culture! Sadly, looking at the history of Sheffield, it will appear grimy and industrial, but modern Sheffield is beautiful and vibrant.

WOW!!! I just found this article about Julian Bean. He wrote a book about Folk Clubs and Artists around Britain. We used to hang out with him at the Barley Mow Folk Club when he was just getting into the scene!!!! He was simply called BEAN in those days. I never even knew his name was Julian!

Old buildings updated for new Forging technology. Sheffield was always famous for its steel——- in 1913 a man called Harry Brearley added chromium to iron, about 12.8%, and the result was steel that didn’t rust or stainless steel. I have always been curious about having a surname soooooo close to Brearley ( mine is Braeley). But the fact that we are both from Sheffield makes me think!!

My good friends The Dunns!! Ian and Pam and parents and kids. These very fine people would put me up and feed me every time I went back to England for a visit.Years earlier, Ian and Pam visited the US. They knew of my brother John in Miami so touched base with him. After they had their fill of down South they decided to head North. So my brother gave them my number to call me when they reach the Boston area. These guys were total strangers to me and I was kind of annoyed at my brother. They stayed at my house for over a year!!! Ian and Pam became my closest friends in the world! They actually got married at my house!!!
